Monday Mixtape
Featuring Charlotte Adigéry + Bolis Pupil, Campbell Rice, Beauty Queen, Slow Pulp, Molly Parden, and Reneé Rapp
Hellloooo and happy Monday! I’m back with Monday Mixtape #3. As a recap, Monday Mixtape is a bi-weekly installment where I share what I’ve been listening to lately. The link to the Spotify playlist you can find the tracks on is available below (and here), along with the link to the Monday Mixtape Archive.
Note: If you’re reading this and the playlist above ^ doesn’t match what I’m writing about in the rest of this post, you might be reading an old post (or the Spotify widget is acting funny). Archived tracks from past playlists will live on the Monday Mixtape Archive found here!
Without further ado, here’s what’s been in my rotation lately:
Thank You by Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupil
A welcome recommendation from so many wonderful people (Kai, Casey, and Caleb - I’m looking at you!). This is the sassiest, funniest, most infectious pop art album I’ve listened to in a minute. One minute you’re in a club vibing to the sound of vibrant synths and thumping beats and the next you’re raising eyebrows and laughing at the tongue-in-cheek jokes and lighthearted jabs.
“My inspiration comes from you
Oh what an honour
I am not worthy of your kindness
Noble intentions”
I’ve legitimately laughed out loud listening to this. Do me a favor and check out “Blenda,” too.
Reminds me of: Ziwe, if she made music. But really, her, and a little bit of Sudan Archives and Christine and the Queens
all i want by Campbell Rice
Campbell is a Lakeland local who recently dropped a very fun dance album. It’s fun, it’s sweet, it’s genuine. It’s the kind of bop that makes you want to wiggle and grab your honey and give them a smooch.
“I go home and find another world
all i want is you
and everyone else is for another world”
The album reminds me of being at the beach with friends. It’s a good one to add to your end-of-summer playlist.
Reminds me of: NEIL FRANCES, The World of Birds, and Last Dinosaurs
Real Life by Beauty Queen
This isn’t a new one, and Beauty Queen has been in my rotation for the past couple of years now. “Real Life” popped up recently as I was shuffling through my library and I had one of those “wow this is really good” moments, not just because of the vibe of the song itself but the lyrics, too.
“Feel it all, take your time
Even when you say goodbye
It’s all part of a real life
Not everything’s gonna be alright
Everybody pays thеir price
It’s all part of a real life”
A gentle reminder for every day. It’s all part of a real life!
Reminds me of: ELIO, Barrie, Yumi Zouma, and Freak Slug
Broadview by Slow Pulp
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I’m a sucker for anything with a lap steel guitar. Give me something that gives off any kind of alternative indie “sad yeehaw” vibes and I’ll be all over it. Slow Pulp’s vocals are beautiful, too. Delicate, clear, and full of depth.
“Am I wrong?
Or is it okay to stay inside
And out of love?
Tell me I'm wrong
I'm just gonna give it a try
And hope that it's enough”
Also, can we talk about that cover art??
Reminds me of: Momma, Soccer Mommy, Faye Webster, and Squirrel Flower
I See Right Now by Molly Parden
I don’t think there’s a piece of music that Molly Parden could put out that I wouldn’t enjoy. She is consistent — consistently good, consistently witty, and consistently sure of what she wants to say and why.
“I’ll find the strength to say it to you one day
I see all that I’ve always wanted here with you
And I see right now I’ve always wanted to be here too”
Fun fact: A few years ago, Molly visited Lakeland one day (back when King State had a secondary location at The Joinery — she is/was a big KS fan) and I lost my mind when I saw her post a photo of her walking around Lake Mirror. A very cool but weird moment for me. Parasocial relationships are so strange.
Reminds me of: Andy Shauf, Faye Webster, and Bedouine
Tummy Hurts by Reneé Rapp
What a solid debut full-length album. I have my brother (shoutout to you, Justin) to thank for this one. I knew Reneé Rapp primarily from her 2018 Jimmy Awards win followed by her taking over the role of Regina George in the Broadway musical Mean Girls. Recently, I’d been keeping up with her via the teen comedy-drama The Sex Lives of College Girls where she plays Leighton.
Admittedly, I never checked out her music prior to this album. Not because she doesn’t have a beautiful voice (the woman has PIPES) but because I wrongfully assumed I wouldn’t enjoy it. I thought it might have too much of a musical theatre edge (which, no hate to that, but it isn’t really my go-to vibe most days).
But man…was I impressed. My intro to this album was “Gemini Moon,” but “Tummy Hurts” is a song for anyone who has had their heart broken and isn’t ready to hear that their ex moved on. It’s so fun to sing in the car. Reneé’s talent is very apparent, both in voice and in lyricism.
“Maybe I should try religion
'Cause Jesus, you're hard to rely on
I'd never find you in the kitchen
Couldn't even pay rent for three months
Oh, I heard you, I get it, you're broke (broke)
But oh, you always had money to smoke, though”
Reminds me of: SZA, Jazmine Sullivan, Olivia Dean, and Olivia Rodrigo
It’s a lighter week, but thanks for tuning in. Let me know what you think if you end up giving any of these a listen. Hope you enjoy + happy listening!
